HOW AND WHY YOU SHOULD ROCK RED LIPS THIS FALL!

September 26, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Monday!

I hope that all of you had a wonderful weekend! My husband, Stephan, and I took our kids to Mackinac Island and had beautiful weather for it. If you’d like to see our trip, you can watch our KwapisFamilyTackles Daily Vlog. Now that September is almost over I have switched my wardrobe and makeup to fall mode, and that includes my lipstick! I have started wearing deeper colors and someone commented to me that they “couldn’t” pull off red lips, so I wanted to do a little post on how you can rock red lips and why I think you should try it!

WHAT RED LIPSTICK IS RIGHT FOR ME?

whichredlipstickisrightforme-leahtackles.jpeg

If you have fair skin and/or skin with pink undertones blue toned lipsticks tend to look the best on you, so look for red lipsticks that lean more pink than orange.

If you have medium or olive toned skin then looking for red lipsticks that are a bit more on the orange side look the best on you.

If you have a deeper skin tone red lipsticks that are more purple or wine colored will look amazing on you.

WHAT RED LIPSTICK “RULES” SHOULD I BE AWARE OF?

I think the biggest thing is toss any rule you hear out the window if it isn’t what makes you feel fantastic! I usually stick to blue toned red lipsticks, but I have my fair share of vampy wine colored shades and orangey reds and even if they aren’t my “perfect” color I rock them ; )

I think one rule that is very important is be very careful if you wear pink or coral with a red lip because it can often clash. Also, be very very careful if you’re wearing leopard or other animal print clothing and a red lip.

As a general rule, stick with neutral makeup looks and keep your red lips the focus of your makeup.

Avoid very pink or dark blush or else you might look like a clown, I prefer a slightly more brown shade and applying with a light hand when I wear red lipstick.

WHY SHOULD I WEAR RED LIPSTICK?

Red lipstick is iconic and timeless, and wearing a red lip can make you feel that way too.

Red lipstick makes you look confident, and there is a very good chance you’ll start to feel more confident too.

Red lipstick allows you to go very neutral with the rest of your makeup and hair but still look like you spent a lot of time getting ready! I love throwing on a red lip when my hair is in a top knot and the rest of my makeup is very neutral! I also love doing a super simple winged eye liner with a red lip and almost no other makeup.

TIPS FOR APPLYING RED LIPSTICK:

Always wear a lip liner! I like to start by carefully lining my lips with a red lip liner and then lightly filling them in with the same liner. I apply one layer of lipstick and if it is not a liquid lipstick I sometimes lightly blot with a tissue (*Tip:a coffee filter works even better for blotting!). Before I head out the door I make an “O” with my lips and put a clean index finger in my mouth and pull it out so that any extra lipstick comes off on my finger and not my teeth.

SOME FAVORITE RED LIP GOODIES:

redlipsticksforeveryone-howtowearredlips-leahtackles.jpeg

Jordana Easy Liner in Sedona Red

This is so inexpensive that it is perfect if you’re just starting out! It also doesn’t need to be sharpened which is a big perk.

NYX Retractable Lip Liner in Red

I love this liner because it goes well with almost all of my red lipsticks.

L’Oreal Collection Exclusive Colour Riche Reds Collection

These are all fantastic lipsticks! I own five of them and shown in this post (the first picture in the post) are (top to bottom) Blake’s (my favorite!), Eva’s, and Zoe’s.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

This is easy to apply and the wear is awesome! I think this shade looks great on everybody.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Sarafine

This leans a bit more orange than I typically go for, but I love this shade! And I love that I can eat and still not have to reapply! Very long wearing and comfortable to wear.

Lancome Juicy Tubes

If you’re really nervous about a red lip, try a pigmented red gloss first or a tinted lip balm. I also like to add a bit of this gloss to the center of my lips when I want to accentuate my red pout.

If you found this post helpful, please “Pin” it to your Pinterest account using the tabs at the bottom of each post or by hovering over any of the pictures in this post. Have a wonderful day!

MAKEUP SETTING SPRAYS: WHY & HOW TO USE THEM!

August 24, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

I hope that you’re having a great week so far! One makeup item that I use daily, but up until now have only casually mentioned on my blog or YouTube channel is makeup setting spray! So, today I thought that I would share the basics of why you may want to consider trying a makeup setting spray if you haven’t already, and how to use them. If you like these types of posts, please comment so that I know and can keep it up : ) Your comments always make me smile ; )

urbandecayallnightermakeupsettingspray-leahtackles.jpeg

WHAT IS A MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY?

Just like a makeup primer (*Note: my favorite is the Benefit Porefessional) is used to help keep your makeup in place, a setting spray is used to help keep you makeup in place. A primer is used before you apply your makeup, and a  setting spray is used after you’ve applied your makeup.

WHY YOU SHOULD USE THEM:

Just like you would use a protective coat when painting your nails or Mod Podge on a craft project, you should apply this final step after working hard on your makeup! Makeup setting sprays should not change the look or texture of your makeup. Makeup setting sprays are sold by both drugstore brands and high end brands and also just like foundation they have different formulas for different skin types. Setting sprays can also help if you’ve gone a bit overboard on powder products and help get you back to a more natural look while helping lock your makeup in place.

HOW TO USE THEM:

I like to spray about 8-10 inches away from my face first make a “T” formation and then an “X” formation. If I just have a regular, casual makeup day I will do one “T” and one “X” but if I am getting ready for a big event or a dinner date I will do each one twice for a total of four sprays.

MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY SUGGESTIONS:

FOR OILY SKIN:

Urban Decay All Nighter

(*Note: My holy grail setting spray!)

FOR DRY SKIN:

NYX Setting Spray Dewy Skin

FOR ALL SKIN TYPES:

Laura Geller Spackle Mist

Thank you so much for reading! If you would “Pin” this to your Pinterest you would totally make my week ; ) And don’t forget to susbcribe! xx

$3 EYE SHADOW TRIOS YOU NEED TO GO BUY!

August 17, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog! It really does mean so much to me!! : ) .I have had people ask me to just tell them what to buy, or tell me that they don’t know where to begin when it comes to eye shadow. Today I want to talk about Wet n’ Wild Color Icon Eye Shadow Trios! These are about $3 each, and that price is a fantastic value! These are super soft and super pigmented shadows that are easy to blend. I also love these because they tell you right on the packaging where to apply each color to create a beautiful and easy look. You can of course wear the eye shadows however you like, but I think that having a little direction is less intimidating for beginners. If you’re a longtime reader you’ve heard me talk about these before, but they really are worth the mention again!

My Favorite Wet n’ Wild Trios:

HOW & WHY TO USE AN EYESHADOW PRIMER OR BASE

July 25, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Monday!

I hope that you’re having a wonderful start to your week! For years I didn’t prime my eyes or even know what it meant to prime my eyes before applying eye shadow, but now it’s an essential part of my routine that I want to share with you incase you are skipping this step of your makeup routine.

eyeshadowprimer-eyeshadowbase-leahtackles.jpeg

WHAT IS AN EYE SHADOW PRIMER?

An eye primer, like Too Faced Shadow Insurance, is used to prep your eye before you apply your eyeshadow. An eye primer gives you a smooth surface before you apply eyeshadow, and also help prevent the natural oils in your skin from breaking down your eyeshadow during the day. Primers also neutralize any discoloration on your lids which helps eyeshadow colors to appear very pigmented when applied. Primers also help make your eyeshadow easier to blend, which is a huge benefit!

WHAT IS AN EYE SHADOW BASE?

Primers help for your eyeshadows to appear more intense and pigmented. An eye shadow base can be many different things, but the general term means something that is a little moist or sticky that helps the shadow stick to your eye. A base does not always help with creasing like a primer does, but a lot of things that can be used as a base, such as a M.A.C Paint Pot or Maybelline Color Tattoo, can also be used as a primer for an easy 2-in-1.

HOW TO USE THEM:

I always use an eye shadow primer of some kind, but often when I’m hurrying I use something that can perform as both a primer and a base. I also will sometimes use only a base, such as the Maybelline Color Tattoos! I actually was wearing a Maybelline Color Tattoo with nothing else on top on my eyes the morning my youngest son, Logan, was born and it lasted all though labor and from the day before…good stuff, huh?

SOME OF MY FAVORITES:

My favorite primer is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but I also like the Urban Decay Primer Potion. You can often get these primers in a deluxe sample size with holiday sets or other kits which is great because a little tiny bit goes a long way and they last forever!

My favorite eye shadow base products are the Maybelline Color Tattoos (there is also a stick form available!) and the M.A.C Paint Pots.

I hope that you found this helpful! As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Also, feel free to share this on social media using the easy share buttons at the bottom of each post : ) xx

Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly Palette Review! Do you need it?

May 9, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Monday!

I hope that all of you had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! I got lots of extra special hugs and love from my little loves and my husband : ) My kids somehow managed to buy me a little something from Ulta (thanks Stephan!) and I am so excited to share it with you today! At the end of February Too Faced Cosmetics released the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette and even though I wanted it I wondered if it was really something I *needed*. Do you *need* the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette? Keep reading and you can decide.

The Packaging:

This palette comes in the cute tin packaging that the nine shadow palettes from Too Faced typically come in. The packaging is OH SO ADORABLE! I can’t even handle the cuteness! I mean, the piece of bread on the tin has lashes and jelly colored lips…hello cuteness overload! I also think these tins are perfect for traveling and putting into your makeup bag.

The Basics:

This palette has three shadows that are 2.0 grams each and six shadows that are 0.9 grams each. There are three matte shades and six shimmer shades, though one of the shimmer shades is almost matte but has just the tinniest bit of shimmer. And this product does not contain actual nuts but does have the ever so faint peanut butter scent mixed with the yummy cocoa powder scent we know and love from other Too Faced products.

The Shadows:

The shadows swatch beautifully! They are all super pigmented and a little shadow goes a long way! I have only used this twice so far, but both times I was tapping off my brush because the pigmentation was so great that I didn’t need much product at all. This palette was inspired by the shadow Peanut Butter that gained a cult following from the Too Faced Semi Sweet palette. I love putting Peanut Butter or Nuts About U in the crease and smudging Jelly on my lower lash line.

Do You Need It?

You might have dupes for these if you own a lot of eye shadow palettes, but I really love having smaller palette like this filled with gorgeous warm toned shadows that I know will get me lots of fun looks. I think this is a great too because you can do a lot of quick looks with this and the How-To Glamour Guide it comes with is helpful too. If you don’t like warm toned eye shadows, definitely pass because this eye shadow palette is very warm toned! Think peanut butter, jelly, and nutty red colors!

Buy It:

You can buy the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette at Ulta Beauty or on TooFaced.com

IS YOUR UNDER EYE CONCEALER MAKING YOUR FINE LINES AND DARK CIRCLES MORE VISIBLE?

January 25, 2016 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Monday!

This morning I was thrilled to be volunteering in my 4 year olds classroom for a few hours, and her sweet teacher asked me about under eye concealer suggestions. First of all, thank you for asking! I absolutely love getting questions from all of you, and every time I take it as a compliment! So, ask away! I am also a huge fan of this topic, because I have (BAD) dark circles! I’ve talked about it before, but the combo of three kids under five and genetics (love ya mom and dad!) makes my dark circles situation rough most days. I also think it’s a super important topic because if you don’t apply or set your under eye concealer correctly it can cause the makeup to set into your fine lines making the lines and dark circles more visible! Let’s be real, none of us have time for that!

What I Do For My Under Eye Make Up and Dark Circles:

UNDEREYECONCEALERTIPS-DARKCIRCLETIPS-LEAHTACKLES.jpeg

1. If you’re not using an eye cream, you should be! I really love using the Benefit It’s Potent Eye Cream which you can find at Ulta or Sephora. It’s a little pricy, but I really like this and it has helped my dark circles to appear less drastic. I also like this because it doesn’t take forever to absorb into the skin, and it doesn’t feel heavy at all.

2. I always use some sort of pinky/salmon concealer to brighten up the dark circles under my eyes. My go-to favorite is a drugstore concealer! I use the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles in Brightener! Make sure you get the one that actually says “Dark Circles” because they also have a regular concealer that isn’t specific to the under eye area. I also really like the Benefit Erase Paste, it works so well on days when I want maximum concealing power, but it’s thicker and harder to work with when I’m in a real hurry.

3. I then use a concealer (Tip: Look for one that is one shade lighter than your skin tone for extra brightening power! But I am very fair so I just get the lightest shade offered) over the brightening concealer from step 2. I really love the Estée Lauder Double Wear Concealer or the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye! I like to make a triangle under each eye and then use either a damp Beauty Blender, or my Sigma F86 Tapered Kabuki Brush (any makeup sponge similar to this or tapered kabuki brush will work) to pat and lightly press the concealer into the skin. Don’t drag the brush in a painting motion! You want that product to stay there!!

*Note: Sometimes I go from step 2 to step 4 and skip this step altogether, but most days I include this in my routine.

4. I then ALWAYS set my under eye concealer with a loose setting powder, preferably a brightening setting powder, with my Sigma F35 Tapered Highlighter (or a fan brush works wonderfully too!).  By setting your under eye concealer with a powder you are helping it to stay put, and also avoiding the risk of the product settling into your fine lines or wrinkles. I love the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder or for a much less expensive route, the E.L.F High Definition Under Eye Setting Powder is also fantastic! Who can beat $3?!

BECCA x JACLYN HILL SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR HIGHLIGHT IN CHAMPAGNE POP-WORTH THE HYPE?

September 30, 2015 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

I hope that you’re having a great week! Thank you for stopping by my blog today : )

I watch more YouTube than I do T.V, and I also have two YouTube channels, so I was really excited when I heard that Jaclyn Hill (a hugely popular beauty guru on YouTube) was collabing with Becca cosmetics to make her very own highlight. The Becca highlights have been popular for awhile now, but I just wasn’t sure I could justify the price. And even though I was excited that Jaclyn was making her own shade, I’ll admit I wasn’t sure it would be worth it. I’m just going to throw out the mystery right now…this highlight is the perfect highlight! I am absolutely adoring it.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop

beccacosmeticsjaclynhill-champagnepop-highlight-leahtackles.jpeg IMG_0435 IMG_0436

I have had highlighters that I’ve loved, and I’ve had highlighters that I’ve liked, but oh my goodness this highlight! I have never had a highlight that is so, “Bam!”. It looks incredible on the skin, incredible on camera, incredible in natural lighting, and I get compliments on my makeup whenever I wear it. I also have very fair skin, and was worried that the “champagne” shade wouldn’t work on my skin, but it’s absolutely stunning. I’ve seen this swatched on so many people and it’s beautiful every time. My only word of warning would be to use a very light hand, a very very little goes a long way. I sweep this on my cheekbones but not too terribly close to my eye so that it doesn’t bring attention to any lines. Go get this before they are gone!! I really want to try another Becca highlight now, so if you have any suggestions please let me know!

Have a fun weekend with those who you love!! xx

DRUGSTORE LIPSTICK PICKS FOR FALL & MY FAVORITE LIP TIP FOR FULL LIPS

September 2, 2015 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

It is September! And even though this week still feels like summer, I know that once Hailey goes back to school next week it will really feel like fall. I am absolutely ready for darker lips, and today I want to share some of my favorite drugstore fall lip colors. If you’re interested in some of my high-end favorites I can definitely share those as well. I am also sharing my favorite tip for giving your lips more of a pout!!

drugstorefalllipsticks-leahtackles.jpeg

NYX EXTRA CREAMY ROUND LIPSTICK IN CHAOS

This gorgeous blue toned red cream formula lipstick is seriously pigmented and wears comfortably on my lips. I love this for days when I want a lighter eye (or let’s be real, I’m rushing!) and want my lips to be the focus of my makeup. You can put this on and it instantly looks like you spent time geting ready.

JORDANA TWIST & SHINE MOISTURIZING LIP BALM STAIN IN CRANBERRY CRUSH

I love the dark, bold, and matte lip colors that come with the cooler months, but some days my lips can’t take it! I love this because it’s just enough color, and feels amazing on my lips.

RIMMEL LASTING FINISH BY KATE LIPSTICK IN 08

This is the perfect “Kylie Jenner lip color” that became so hugely popular last fall. This color is a nod to the 90’s lip, but doesn’t wash out my very fair skin. This also feels really nice on the lips! I love the Rimmel Kate lipsticks.

RIMMEL LASTING FINISH BY KATE LIPSTICK IN 14

This color is very similar to 08 metioned above but a tad lighter and more nude. I love this lipstick and wear it a lot as a nude in the fall.

JORDANA EASY LINER FOR LIPS IN ROCK N’ ROSE

This is one of my favorite lipliners in my entire collection! It is PERFECT for a nude 90’s lip.

MAYBELLINE COLOR SESATIONAL LIPSTICK IN BLUSHING BEIGE (NUDES COLLECTION)

This is the most flattering nude for my fair, cool toned skin. The Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks are one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite range of lipsticks.

TIP FOR FULLER LIPS:

1. Find a lipliner that is 1-2 shades deeper than your natural lip color and *slightly* overdraw your cupids bow.

2. Use a matte lipstick or lipstick that doesn’t have too much shimmer because shimmer or sparkle can make the overdraw obvious.

3. Put a dab of gloss or highlighter in the center of your lips.

Have you gotten your first pumpkin flavored item yet? Do you even like pumpkin flavored things? I am ready to pull out some fall candles, paint my nails a little darker, and rock some perfect fall lips!! As always, I would love to hear from you! And please subscribe!

6 Lip Colors You Can Apply In A Rush! No Lipliner Required!

August 12, 2015 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

First I want to say a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my husband, Stephan, who is celebrating his 29th birthday today! Thank you for your constant support and positive attitude!! I love you so!

Today I want to share my top 6 picks for lip colors you can apply in a rush.  I love gorgeous bold lipsticks as much as the next girl, but I definitely can’t rock those colors every day. For one thing, I am constantly kissing little faces and that can be a pain ; ) But more often than not it is because I need to be able to apply color fast, and often times without a mirror, or in a moving vehicle.

*Note: please don’t try to apply makeup while driving ladies, it’s just not worth an accident! <– yes, I had to be a mom for a second.

Are You Making These 5 Makeup Mistakes?!

June 8, 2015 & 4 Comments

Hi there! Happy Monday!

I hope that you had a great weekend! First things first, MICHIGAN readers have you entered to win the LivnFresh Detroit D shirt I’m giving away? It’s perfect for any Tiger fan! You have a few hours left to enter. You can enter on the LeahTackles Facebook page, and entering is easy : )

Now, I decided to talk about 5 makeup mistakes that are VERY common! Now, I am not claiming that I don’t make plenty of makeup mistakes, but I know that I make a lot less than I used to. So, today I am sharing 5 things that you should make sure you’re not guilty of.

*Note: These are *my* opinions and of course if you really enjoy what you’re doing or one of these makeup “mistakes” then please understand that I mean no offense to you and you should do whatever makes YOU feel beautiful! xx

5makeupmistakes-leahtackles.jpeg

#1 Using Expensive Makeup With Cheap Brushes

It took me YEARS to invest in nice makeup brushes. I didn’t own any brushes, except for the brushes that came in kits or that I found in tiny cheap kits at the drugstore, until after college. FOR SHAME : ( Using good brushes helps for your makeup to look better, period. I suggest starting with a kit, Sephora has some basic but get-the-job-done kits, and I love the sets from Sigma Beauty.

#2 Not Blending Your Eye Shadow

Just because you know to put a brow bone highlight, lid color, and crease color doesn’t mean your look is compelte, girl! BLENDING is your bff! Use a clean blending brush, and it will turn your amature eye makeup skills into art. My favorite blending brush is the E25 from Sigma.

#3 Too Much Dark Eye Liner On Lower Lash Line

Just. Say. No. This should not be an everyday look. Or at least please smudge it out. I did my fair share of this in high school, but seriously just try skipping it, or just doing your top lashline and waterline, because the difference is HUGE! It will open up your eyes and make your eyes look bigger.

#4  Ignoring Your Eyebrows

Yay for beautiful, groomed but not over plucked, filled in brows!!! I am so glad brows are back! On days where I wear no other makeup, I still like to fill in my brows and throw on some lipstick. Even if you just use a tinted brow gel, do not ignore your brows! Also, do not overpluck or let someone do too much waxing on your brows.

#5 Sleeping in Your Makeup

I did this all through college multiple days a week (days I went to a party or the bar, let’s be honest) and my skin was beautiful. Well guess what? Now I’m in my late 20’s and I want to keep my skin as beautiful as possible for as long as possible, so washing off your makeup is essential.  At the VERY LEAST use a makeup removing wipe ( I like these ones from Neutrogena). I have timed it, I can use a makeup remover, wash my face, use a toner, moisturizer, and eye cream in about 3 minutes. And it just FEELS clean.

Do you agree with these makeup mistakes? What makeup mistakes do you admit to making or have you made in the past? If you like these types of posts, please let me know in the comments and don’t forget to share! Thank you so much!!
